The fourth in a series of “Spirit of Wellness” courses prepared and facilitated by Rabbi Bernie Gerson on Thursdays 7:00-8:00pm Four sessions, beginning July 1 (start date contingent upon 10 registrations by June 29). This mini-course will survey the Hebrew Bible, Jewish Liturgy, and Jewish Thought for their respective mentions and contexts of water. Attention will also be given to the role played by water in the composite of the human body, as well as the physical benefits of proper hydration.
Session 1 will establish the ethos, goals and methodology of the course, and then delve into numerous stories involving water (e.g. The Flood, Crossing of the Reed Sea, Complaints About Water in the Wilderness).
Session 2 will explore the symbolism of water in Psalms, Proverbs, and the Siddur.
Session 3 will investigate the parallels between chesed (lovingkindness) and water in mystical and contemporary spiritual texts, as well as the importance of water to our biorhythms.
Session 4 will examine some halachic angles on water (e.g. mikvah, berachot) and then devote time to bringing together all of the concepts discussed in the course.
